Ann DeLaurentis is a Lancaster-based
artist working in watercolor and etching, and is primarily known for
her color intensive urban structural "post-precisionist" paintings and
up-close floral studies. She exhibits regionally and has had 18 solo
exhibits, including three solo exhibits at the Lancaster Museum of Art,
and solo exhibits in galleries in Philadelphia, Lancaster, Harrisburg,
Stone Harbor, and other regional cities, and numerous group and juried
exhibits. She is a signature member of the Pennsylvania Watercolor
Society and the Philadelphia Water Color Society, and was recently
invited to present a watercolor demonstration at the Philadelphia Water
Color Society Annual International Juried Exhibit. Ann has also been a
member of the Echo Valley Art Group for the past sixteen years, an
invitational group of artists in Lancaster County with annual exhibits
and art auctions. Ann has taught photography at the
high school level, and college studio watercolor classes, as well as
watercolor and etching workshops in her studio. Her last solo
exhibit, held at Red Raven Art Company in Lancaster in May of 2010, was
titled Cities
Revisited, and
featured all new watercolor paintings of city spaces that she viewed as
a culmination of the urban structural concepts that she had worked with
for the past two decades.
Her
work
and watercolor techniques were featured in a 10 page article in the
December 2009 issue of Watercolor Artist magazine.
"For me, the creation of art is all about pouring energy into a
surface, building an image that holds a force of creative energy for
the viewer to absorb. The architecture of Lancaster is a constant
source of inspiration for my paintings with its warm brick tones and
simple geometric spaces. I have been creating images of Lancaster for
more than two decades that have become a recording of my visual
impressions of
the beautiful and colorful series of spaces that make up my city. Other
cities that I love, including Philadelphia, have also inspired
some of my series of watercolor paintings. My newer images range from
the urban and industrial
to the rural iconic scenes of Lancaster, not only for their contrasting
vistas, but because it is important to me to capture the disappearing
and changing
industrial landscapes of Lancaster, as well as the seemingly endless
fields
of our countryside that we work so hard to preserve. My floral
paintings are about
exotic organic forms, vibrant colors, and the delicate movement of
flowers and leaves in their natural settings. They could never be
considered "still life". The high-chroma wet-in-wet
techniques used in my watercolors are unique to my painting style.
Intaglio/etching printmaking processes also play a big role in my
work. The etching process gives me an opportunity to work with line and
texture, and contrast and light, in a way that is completely different
from my watercolor paintings."
